Chapter XI: Teenage Angst

Rowan picked thoughtfully on the strings of her guitar.  It was a way for her to let all her emotions pour out of her sole, without announcing them to the world.  She was Sixteen now.  The last few years of her life had been an interesting one.  At least she had enough ill begotten memories to fuel the lyrics that she so casually strummed.  One topic that seemed to always creep into every melodic tune was her deep seeded love for Joshua.  Though outwardly she voiced contentions for Love, within she craved it.  Especially now that Amelia was head over heels for Onion.

Rowan’s cellphone began to ring suddenly, forcing her to cease playing.  As she raised the phone closer to her eyes, she saw that it was Joshua who was calling.

“Hey, what’s up?”  Rowan asked as casually as she could, not knowing if he could hear the longing in her voice.

“Nothing much.  I’m really bored…do you wanna hang out?” He asked nonchalantly.

“Alright.  You can come over my house, my Mom’s out running errands.”  She replied hurriedly.

“Give me a sec. and I’ll be right over.” Joshua answered back.  Rowan hung up her phone and raced back inside to make sure she look decent.  While she was fixing her hair, her doorbell sounded.

“He’s here already…but I’m not done yet!” Rowan quickly finished up and let Joshua inside.

They talked for a little while but soon decided to put some music on.  Joshua asked if she wanted to dance with him.  And of course she took him up on his offer.  As they moved closer, their eyes met suddenly.  Rowan could no longer hear the music blaring and everything around them blurred into nonexistence.  Nervously, Rowan look away.  She wasn’t sure if he reciprocated the feelings she had for him.  And she couldn’t risk telling him and ruining their friendship.

After Joshua left, Rowan decided to go for a walk on the beach.  The waves rolled over her feet as she walked along the shoreline.  She paused and closed her eyes, breathing in sweet salty air.  She loved the Ocean.  It was full of so much beauty and chaos.  One day she hoped to buy a boat and just sail away from everything.  Opening her eyes she felt a strong urge to call Joshua.

“Hey, are you busy?”  Rowan inquired.

“No, not really.  What’s up?”  Joshua answered back.

“Meet me down by the Pier, I gotta talk to you about something.”

“OK, I’ll be right there.”

Rowan waited impatiently for Joshua.  Nervous and shaking, she began  regretting what she had done.  But she didn’t have long to shake off her feelings of remorse, Joshua had arrived.  She unsteadily made her way over to him and forced out a smile.  They walked side by side along the Pier without a word.  As they neared the end, Joshua reached out and put his hand on her shoulder.

“I can tell something is bothering you.  Come on, let me know what’s wrong.” He begged.

“I. I don’t…”  Stammered Rowan.

“You don’t what?” Joshua asked anxiously.

“What I mean to say was…I really like you a lot, Josh.  You’ve been there for me when no one else has, no matter what.  I’m so lucky to have someone like you in my life.” Rowan finally choked out.

Joshua pulled Rowan closer to him, wrapping his arms around her torso.  He smiled thoughtfully at her as he brushed a stray hair from her face.  Love had finally found Rowan and she wasn’t sure exactly how to embrace it.  All her life, Love had been the root of all her Mother’s anguish.  And now, Love was knocking on her door.  Regret pulsated throughout her entire body.  Just as Joshua leaned forward to kiss her, she stumbled backwards and ran.  Joshua just stood there stunned, not knowing what he had done wrong.
